Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) concluded its successful participation in the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2019, one of the key events of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week organised by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) from 14–17 January 2019 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
DEWA’s stand received a large number of visitors, experts, specialists, and energy companies, in addition to a number of VIPs, decision-makers, senior officials in regional and global energy sector. Also, international and diplomatic delegations visited DEWA’s stand to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and exchange experiences with DEWA, while reviewing DEWA’s success story and major energy projects.
HE Suhail Al Mazroui, the UAE’s Minister of Energy and Industry, visited DEWA’s stand where he was briefed on DEWA’s latest projects and efforts to promote sustainable development and develop the energy sector. HE Dr Abdul Hussain Mirza, Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Bahrain, also visited DEWA’s stand, where he was briefed on DEWA’s latest projects and efforts to promote sustainable development and develop the energy sector. Emphasising the role played by DEWA in supporting creative young talents and minds, Alia Al Mansouri, the Emirati student and the winner of NASA’s ‘Genes in Space’ competition, also stopped by. Al Mansouri praised DEWA’s innovation, saying that DEWA consistently launches new innovative initiatives and projects that ensure continuous improvement and development of its operations and services.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, affirmed DEWA’s distinguished and effective participation at WFES 2019, and that the summit provided a global platform for sharing experiences and best practices, and exploring investment opportunities in clean energy sector across the Middle East, which is one of the world’s most promising renewable energy markets. Al Tayer reiterated that DEWA’s participation in WFES as the Summit’s Efficiency Partner comes is part of its intent to highlight the role of the UAE in developing the energy sector globally and consolidate its position as a major supporter for green economy and environmental, social and economic sustainable development.
“Through its stand at WFES, DEWA showed its most prominent developed and sustainable projects and initiatives that highlight its efforts in innovating advanced solutions, adopting the latest technologies, and launching major initiatives and projects to increase reliance on clean energy and achieve the Dubai Clean Energy 2050 to provide 75% of Dubai’s total clean energy by 2050. DEWA contributes to the preservation of the environment and natural resources to help achieve the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy 2021, which has a target to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021. This is aligned with the directives of the UAE’s wise leadership, and supports the national strategies and directives, most prominently the UAE Centennial 2071 to make the UAE the best country in the world,” said Al Tayer.
At DEWA’s stand number 5130 in Hall 5 (Energy Hall) at ADNEC, DEWA highlighted its latest innovative projects and initiatives, most prominently the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar park in the world with a production capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and investments up to AED 50 billion. DEWA also showed its smart initiatives to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world, including the Shams Dubai initiative to connect solar panels on buildings to DEWA’s grid, and the Green Charger initiative to build the infrastructure and electric vehicle charging stations. DEWA has installed over 200 electric vehicle charging stations across Dubai.
DEWA’s stand at WFES 2019 also featured a model of its new headquarters, Al-Sheraa, which will be the tallest, largest, and smartest government zero-energy building in the world. DEWA also displayed a model of the smart grid station (SGS) which highlights e Smart City model through three concepts: smart office, smart building, and smart factory. The SGS includes a variety of smart-grid technologies, clean-energy technologies, smart meters to monitor the demand for energy and water in real time to reduce loads at peak times, a smart cooling system, and a thermal storage system.
DEWA’s stand hosted the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy; the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia), under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives; and some of DEWA’s companies, including the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon); the MORO data hub offering data centre services and business solutions for public and private companies in the UAE and the region; Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower); Innogy International Middle East; Mai Dubai; and Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ESCO).
