Quote of HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA about World Day for Safety and Health at Work

H.E Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer MD&CEO – DEWA (8)

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work which falls on 28 April each year, by organising activities and events to promote a culture of occupational health and safety and raise awareness amongst all stakeholders on the importance of creating a safe and happy environment at work. At DEWA, we are committed to implementing the highest international standards in occupational safety and health. DEWA has an Integrated Management Systems policy to further promote a culture of health, safety and environment across its divisions and operations. This policy includes compliance with all legislative requirements for awareness raising, prevention of injury, disease and accident, and observance of quality, health, safety and environmental requirements in design, construction, operation and maintenance, and planning, monitoring and measuring the performance of quality, health, safety, and environment systems.
DEWA adopts the highest standards of health and safety as part of its efforts to support one of the most important UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030, by contributing to a safe and secure working environment for all workers by 2030. This is aligned with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the UAE Vision 2021 and the Dubai Plan 2021. We are working to raise the level of awareness by launching relevant programmes, initiatives, guidelines and manuals. We also organise many relevant events, including the annual conference on best practices in the field of quality, health, safety and environment, where a selection of local and international experts in the field of quality, health, safety and environment participated in our ninth session in 2017. We organise ‘Health and Safety Week’ each year to establish the best health, safety and sustainability standards and practices among our stakeholders.
Security and safety standards in DEWA have exceeded 98%, which is considered one of the best rates in the world. The rate of accidents in DEWA’s projects is almost non-existent. In 2017, DEWA was awarded the Sword of Honour for Health and Safety for the 10th time by the British Safety Council. We were one of 50 organisations worldwide to receive this recognition for global leadership, excellence and our commitment to protect our employees and ensure their safety. DEWA has been recognised by the British Safety Council as a certified training centre. DEWA is the first government department to be certified by the Council. DEWA employees and strategic partners who undergo the training are awarded with credit certificates in occupational health and safety from the British Safety Council.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who have shown unrelenting commitment to DEWA’s directives, enabling us to accomplish this high level of safety and health in the workplace.
