HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), received a high-profile delegation from the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), headed by Liu Zhenya, Chairman of GEIDCO. This is one of a series of meetings with international agencies to promote sustainable development around the world. During the meeting, the parties discussed reinforcing common frameworks to promote clean and renewable energy development and energy interconnectivity.

The meeting was attended by Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development & Excellence at DEWA, and Abdul Rahim Sultan, Director of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO).

GEIDCO promotes sustainable energy development through partnerships with regional and international organisations to encourage all countries to establish interconnected lines for all international electricity networks, promote sustainable energy, and establish a global electricity interconnectivity grid.

Al Tayer welcomed the visiting delegation and briefed them on DEWA’s most important projects, initiatives, and programmes to achieve the vision and directives of our wise leadership to anticipate, shape, and build the future as well as achieve the national strategies, reaching up to the UAE Centennial 2071 to secure a happy future and a better life for generations to come as well as strengthen the UAE’s position as the best country in the world.

The UAE has clear local and federal visions and strategies, focusing on the conservation of natural resources, promoting the contribution of clean energy, and implementing green development plans, thereby helping to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)2030.

Al Tayer reviewed the activities of the WGEO which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enable the shift towards green economy and to enable green economy projects globally while supporting countries and organizations in the achievement of their green business goals.

WGEO aims to be a source of innovation, technology, and finance to progress a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy; energy efficiency, and the sustainable use of water and natural resources. WGEO is a pioneering international organisation that brings countries, cities, private sector, financial institutions, international organisations, academic sectors and civil society and youth together to achieve the global green economy goals.

The fifth World Green Economy Summit hosted the foundational phase of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) by holding its first preparatory conference that attracted high-profile representatives from 60 countries. This reflects a great commitment from the world towards green economy and sustainable development.

Al Tayer reviewed Dubai’s experience in developing the renewable and alternative energy sector, rationalising the consumption of natural resources, and finding alternative solutions to traditional energy to achieve sustainable development in the Emirate. DEWA launched a number of ambitious initiatives as part of its efforts to make Dubai a smart, sustainable, and integrated city that achieves sustainable resources and provides a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, thus ensuring green growth and energy efficiency.

Al Tayer affirmed that DEWA is working to achieve the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 announced by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to provide 75% of Dubai’s total clean energy production by 2050. To fulfil this, DEWA launched several green programmes and initiatives, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, with a production capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and a total investment of AED 50 billion. Upon completion, the solar park will contribute to reducing more than 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, and providing thousands of jobs in clean energy and green economy.

Al Tayer stressed that DEWA is working to build solid relations and strategic partnerships with different local, regional, and international public and private organisations, especially the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), which was formed under the patronage of the leaders of the GCC and has become a model for economic integration and cooperation within the Gulf as well as ensured the security of the GCC’s power grid.
