HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO), welcomed Mourad Wahba, Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States. The meeting was attended by Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of the WGEO, and Frode Mauring, UNDP Resident Representative to the UAE, and Abdul Rahim Sultan, Director of the WGEO.
Both parties discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and exchange best practices and experiences in sustainable development, green economy, climate change, and partnerships with the private sector. The projects undertaken by the UNDP in the Arab countries focus on addressing the challenges that face human development, as identified by series of human development reports in the Arab world.
Al Tayer presented Dubai’s successes in promoting sustainability and reinforcing its position as a global hub for green economy, and the role of the World Green Economy Organisation, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in cooperation with the UNDP. The WGEO works through seven platforms: countries, smart and sustainable cities, the private sector, academia, youth, organisations and civil society, and the financial sector.
Al Tayer confirmed the continuation of cooperation with the UNDP to support development and advance the role of WGEO as a strategic factor in building a green economy in the region and around the world. He also talked about the Green Fund, one of the five main pillars of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which includes the establishment of the AED 100 billion Dubai Green Fund to encourage green investment through partnerships with financial institutes.
The Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States praised the strategic partnership between WGEO and UNDP, which supports sustainable development around the world.
