DEWA also displayed its three smart initiatives to promote sustainable development. The first is Shams Dubai, to encourage customers to connect solar power in buildings by installing photovoltaic panels to produce electricity, with the surplus exported to DEWA’s grid. To date, DEWA has connected its grid to 453 solar systems placed on the roofs of buildings in Dubai, including residential, commercial and industrial facilities, with a total capacity of 18.7MW. DEWA will increase this number in the future to reach all buildings in the Emirate by 2030. The second initiative is a smart application for smart meters and smart grids. This application facilitates immediate reconnection in case of interruption; decreases consumption through the use of smart meters; and monitors consumption details accurately and instantly at any time. A total of 200,000 meters were connected by January 2016. By 2020, over 1.2 million smart meters will be installed to replace the mechanical and electromechanical meters across Dubai. The third initiative is the Green Charger, which creates the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations to encourage people to own this type of environment-friendly car. The installation of 100 electric power stations was successfully completed at various locations in Dubai by the end of 2015 in coordination with the concerned authorities. DEWA intends to double this number to 200 in 2018.
The Sustainability stand at DEWA’s section at WETEX 2017 has the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) stand, which is organised in partnership with the Supreme Council of Energy and DEWA and the US Department of Energy. Dubai will host two of these competitions in 2018 and 2020, coinciding with Dubai Expo 2020. The total value of competition prizes is AED 10 million, with participating teams displaying their inventions on global solar technologies under one roof. The winning team will be chosen based on their success in providing a number of elements in the building it has created, including cost effectiveness, consumer attraction, outstanding design and efficient consumption.
The Innovation and Smart Applications stand displayed its latest innovations and technologies in smart transformation, smart services and the continuous development of its operations. DEWA presented its Rammas service, which makes use of artificial intelligence technology to act as a virtual employee. The Rammas service communicates with customers and responds to their enquiries via 24/7 instant chat, on the DEWA website. DEWA’s smart application is available on both iOS and Android platforms, DEWA’s Facebook page, and on the Alexa smart device from Amazon. A range of the latest technologies applied by DEWA was featured, such as the DAQRI smart helmet and smart glasses based on augmented reality technology to help engineers working in power plants to accomplish their tasks; 3D printing technology, which enables DEWA to develop spare parts and improve the performance of maintenance and operations; a Big Data initiative, and the Smart Home Energy Monitoring application, which allows customers to track the average consumption of electrical appliances in their homes.
