DXB is already a record-breaking transport hub, being the world’s largest international airport among other accolades, but it’s now one of the greenest.
Dubai Airports has announced that, alongside DEWA, it will now be home to the region’s largest airport solar energy system, which has been fitted at DXB Terminal 2. It’s not the first major solar park announcement from Dubai this year, with the third phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park near Al Qudra Lakes set to complete, making it becoming the world’s largest single site solar park.
The 15,000 photovoltaic panels have the potential to save more than Dhs3million annually, and reduce the amount of energy used at the terminal by some 29 percent. With an annual energy generation of nearly 7.5million kWh, the solar park has a capacity of 5MW, which is the equivalent of being able to power some 1,500 residences, so it packs some serious power.
Shams Dubai is the city’s clean and renewable energy initiative. Many of the city’s residences are fitted with solar panels that help drastically lower DEWA bills and energy consumption, and can even push surplus energy back to the DEWA grid.
