Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a ceremony for 75 graduates of the second batch of the Carbon Ambassador’s Programme which was launched by DEWA as per the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) criteria, with support from the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon).
The practical aspect of the programme consists of implementing turn-key projects, in partnership with a number of government and private entities. The project aims to retrofit service containers, into sustainably functioning containers. The delegates have been assigned teams, under the supervision of partners. A panel of judges will evaluate the projects, and select the best three teams. During the graduation ceremony, DEWA honoured the first three winning projects, which were sponsored by the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia), the Ministry of Climate Change, and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Suqia, under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has sponsored an innovative project by a team from the Carbon Ambassadors Programme. The project aims to provide one of the largest urban areas in Nairobi with clean drinking water. The project includes the innovative and sustainable transformation of a 20-foot converted shipping container into a water purification unit that uses reverse osmosis and can operate solely on solar energy, with a capacity of 800 gallons. The system produces 7.6 cubic meters of drinking water, aiding over 1500 people per day.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has sponsored the Sustainable Agriculture Container, a project developed by the second batch of the Carbon Ambassadors Programme. The project aims to transform used service containers into sustainable agricultural containers, to spread environmental awareness, and encourage people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. The project that was sponsored by RTA revolved around the concept of innovation, and involved creating sustainable desks for employees.

The future lies ahead of you to prove your capabilities to spearhead the UAE’s water and energy sectors, and carry on the successful journey of Dubai and the UAE at the global level,” said Al Tayer.
