Dubai, UAE, 4 February 2021: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised several virtual awareness activities on the 23rd National Environment Day, held this year under the theme ‘Green Recovery.’ This is part of its efforts to support national efforts to achieve sustainable development.

The activities included awareness competitions on DEWA’s internal channels and social media pages to raise awareness of employees and customers on conserving electricity and water and preserving natural resources. DEWA also held several virtual awareness lectures for school students where it displayed the ‘Noor and Hayat Adventures’ animated series. The series represents DEWA’s animated characters Noor for electricity and Hayat for water. This aims to introduce the students to conservation and following a responsible lifestyle to make positive change. DEWA used Kahoot to enable the participants to ask questions about the National Environment Day, conservation, and protecting the environment.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA highlighted DEWA’s support to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030; and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. This is achieved through pioneering world-class projects, chiefly the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.

“Throughout the year, DEWA organises several awareness activities and initiatives. The conservation programmes and initiatives launched by DEWA have achieved cumulative savings of 2.6 terrawatthours (TWh) of electricity and 8.5 billion gallons of water between 2009 and 2020. This is equivalent to saving AED 1.5 billion and reducing 1.321 million tonnes of carbon emissions. On National Environment Day, we renew our pledge to support national and global efforts to protect natural resources and ensure their sustainability as well as promoting environmental and sustainability issues,” said Al Tayer.

DEWA encourages its customers to use smart and digital channels to complete their transactions. This saves their time and efforts in addition to reducing carbon emissions. DEWA also called on Dubai residents to use electric and hybrid vehicles to create a sustainable and green economy.

DEWA has won several environmental awards including the Five Star Environmental Award from the British Safety Council and the Globe of Honour Award for Environment for the 9th consecutive year, among seven organisations worldwide with full marks. This places DEWA at the forefront of sustainable utilities, fully abiding with all environmental requirements and specifications locally and internationally with zero environmental violations at all its facilities.
