80 employees from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) have received the DEWA Volunteer Diploma, in collaboration with Amity University. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to promote voluntarism among its staff. DEWA celebrated the graduation of the programmes’ first batch on International Volunteer Day, which is 5 December. The graduation ceremony was attended by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, Dr Narayanan Ramachandran, Pro Vice Chancellor of Amity University, university faculty, officials from Expo 2020 Dubai Volunteers Programme, and DEWA officials.
In his speech at the graduation ceremony, Al Tayer thanked Dr Ramachandran and Amity University staff, commending their cooperation with DEWA and their efforts to ensure that the DEWA Volunteer Diploma programme met the highest international standards. Each volunteer completed 32 training hours, with a total of 2,560 hours.
Al Tayer said that the 1st batch of DEWA Volunteer Diploma graduates has a special significance this year as it coincides with the Year of Tolerance in the UAE. He commended the turnout for the DEWA Volunteer Diploma. A total of 217 DEWA employees applied for the programme when it was announced. DEWA selected the 80 employees based on eligibility criteria set by the specialist committee.
“DEWA launched this pioneering training programme as part of its integrated strategy for voluntarism, in line with the vision and directives of the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The culture of volunteering is rooted in Emirati society and volunteering is a civilised approach that stems from the foundations of the UAE, and the noble values that the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, instilled in the hearts of Emiratis, to alleviate human suffering, anywhere regardless of race, nationality, or religion, in adherence to the principles of Islam and Arab traditions. DEWA Volunteer Diploma enhances the capabilities of participants in all aspects of voluntarism, qualifies them to manage volunteering programmes locally and globally, as well as prepare them to become trainers in DEWA’s Volunteer Leadership Programme. This supports Law 5 of 2018, which regulates voluntarism in Dubai and outlines the regulations for encouraging and protecting volunteers, as well as promoting social responsibility and encouraging volunteering among society,” said Al Tayer.
“His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum says, in the Fifty-Year Charter: ‘Our daily businesses and projects should not let us forget about giving to those who need help.’ At DEWA, we work according to an integrated strategy for social responsibility, which includes pioneering humanitarian and volunteering initiatives that support the sustainable and integrated system of volunteering work in Dubai and the UAE. In 2015, DEWA received the MVO8000 in CSR, becoming the first government organisation in Dubai to receive this international certification. Our leading volunteering and humanitarian initiatives and programmes are essential part of our strategy to serve society. This supports the UAE Vision 2021 to build a cohesive society and preserved identity; and the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a city for happy, creative and empowered people who live in a tolerant and inclusive society embracing common civic values. These initiatives and programmes also support our role as a socially-responsible government organisation that helps consolidate the principles of corporate social responsibility, by focusing on giving and volunteering as means to build bridges and bring cultures together,” said Al Tayer.
Al Tayer noted that DEWA’s employees want to take part in the volunteering initiatives we organise throughout the year, whether in the UAE or abroad. Between 2013 and 2018, DEWA staff recorded over 103,000 volunteer hours. This increased society’s happiness to 90% and helped DEWA win the Dubai Giving award at the 21st Dubai Government Excellence Program (DGEP) Awards 2018.
