Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG), presented a case study, on DEWA’s achievements, to university students and specialists in public policies and strategies. This case study will be available in three full chapters of the UAE Public Policy Perspectives book, which was recently launched by MBRSG, to highlight the UAE’s pioneering experience in many strategic areas. The book will be taught at MBRSG as part of its curriculum.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, expressed his pleasure in cooperating with MBRSG, as an educational institution, specialising in public policy in the Arab world. The book documents the mechanisms and frameworks for public policy in the UAE in a number of key development sectors. These policies that have been adopted by the wise government under the leadership of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; as well as HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, have attracted worldwide attention due to their adoption of innovation and creativity as key pillars in all areas of government action in the state.
“The book documents DEWA’s achievements in many areas, confirming our adherence to the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and his vision to elevate government work to the highest levels. These include DEWA’s strategic thinking and planning, its efforts to achieve sustainable development in Dubai, and its role in shaping the future energy sector in the UAE and the region, as well as increasing reliance on clean energy through the construction of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park in the world, which will generate 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030, with total investments worth up to AED 50 billion. When completed, the solar park will contribute to reducing more than 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually,” said Al Tayer.
“The book is important because it will educate our students at MBRSG on the management practices and strategies of one of Dubai Government’s most prominent success stories – DEWA. DEWA received the Leading Government Entity Award in the 20th Dubai Government Excellence Program (DGEP), after achieving global standards of excellence especially in the global indicators of accessibility of electricity, indicators of good management, and optimal utilisation of its assets. This highlights DEWA’s pioneering role in promoting the development of knowledge among young generations for a more prosperous, bright and sustainable future, for us and for generations to come,” added Al Tayer.
“Future generations should be made acquainted with the government’s efforts in the field of comprehensive sustainable development, as this government was early to realise the importance of balancing development and the environment, in order to preserve the right of future generations to enjoy a clean, healthy and safe environment. Therefore, it launched policies, initiatives and programmes to achieve this, including the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021 and Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to transform the emirate into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, as well as the Carbon Abatement Strategy, which aims to reduce carbon emissions to 16% by 2021,” noted Al Tayer.
The UAE Public Policy Perspectives book provides an overview of the development of Dubai, and the global and strategic decisions taken by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to create one of the most accessible and competitive cities in the world. In addition, the book reviews the future vision of the UAE, and its high level of competitiveness in foreign markets, as well as in trade and entrepreneurship, while focusing on seven vital sectors: renewable energy, transport, education, health, technology, water and space.
