On November 16, the world celebrates International Day of Tolerance, and since the UAE is the homeland of tolerance, unity, and peace; we share with the world our celebration on this important occasion. This day reminds us of a fundamental pillar of our true Islamic religion and our authentic Arab culture that renounces violence, and calls to promote security, stability, and tolerance among all people, without discrimination of colour, race, religion, or language.
Over the years, the UAE has affirmed this humanitarian principle, and established it among its people. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and our other Founding Fathers, were keen on ensuring peace and tolerance as well-established national philosophies, to spread happiness to mankind. These values were then promoted by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces; Their Highnesses the Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates; and all the people of the UAE.
Over the years, the UAE has an honourable history of hard work in spreading the message of love, tolerance, and peace on its land, which is home to over 200 communities of different nationalities living in harmony. In 2015, the UAE issued a law on combating discrimination and hatred. In 2016, the UAE established a Ministry of State for Tolerance, and launched the National Tolerance Programme. These initiatives reflect the keenness of our leadership to consolidate the values of tolerance, harmony and coexistence, and to demonstrate the tolerance of Islam and the role of its teachings in achieving safety, security, and stability for all people.
We are honoured by the UAE’s vital role in supporting international efforts to achieve world peace, and consolidating the values of tolerance, harmony, and coexistence. In 2016, the UAE ranked first in the region, and third globally, in an annual Tolerance Index, as per the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland. The report showed the UAE’s elevation by five positions, in comparison with the previous year, surpassing Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and Sweden, which are all countries that exhibit great tolerance.
