“Protecting the environment is a top priority in the UAE. This supports the vision and directives of our wise leadership who continues to carry on the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who laid the foundations of sustainability. The UAE is committed to tackling the effects of climate change through strategies, policies, and pioneering initiatives that involve all members of society in supporting the nation’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, ensuring their sustainability, and promoting environmental awareness. In Dubai, we support these national efforts by increasing the share of renewable and clean energy sources in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to produce 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy, and make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050. Our efforts also support the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021, while encouraging the rational use of electricity and water in line with the Demand Side Management Strategy which aims to reduce demand by 30% by 2030,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

“In line with its vision to become a leading sustainable innovative global corporation, DEWA organises several environmental programmes, initiatives, and awareness campaigns throughout the year. These efforts achieved significant savings over the past years. DEWA’s activities involved all members of society who took part by assisting the national and global efforts to curb the effects of climate change and global warming. The National Environment Day is an important event where society and the public and private-sectors cooperate to show their commitment to protect the environment and preserve our natural resources, for generations to come,” added Al Tayer.
