Water is one of the most basic needs of humanity. It is also a reason to achieve sustainable development. Arabian Water Day, which is annually celebrated by the Arab world on 3rd March, is a public invitation to communities, governments, and responsible entities, in the Arab region, to work towards ensuring the sustainability of water resources in the Arab world. It also aims to combine efforts to effectively manage these resources and maximise economic, social and environmental benefits of water in Arab countries, as well as raise awareness about the most important water issues and challenges facing the region.
The UAE has established its global position in supporting international efforts to address the challenges facing humanity. Under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), Suqia plays a key role in enhancing the UAE’s global efforts to address the challenges of water scarcity, by providing safe drinking water to needy communities suffering from water scarcity and pollution.
Suqia’s vision supports the vision and aspirations of the UN’s sustainable development goals 2030, which sets priorities and aspirations for global development, mainly the sixth objective: “Ensuring the availability of water and sanitation services for all”. At Suqia, we are committed to achieving this objective through joint work and continuous cooperation with the responsible local and international organisations. In the past 3 years, over 8 million people have benefitted from Suqia’s projects in 25 countries around the world.
In addition to providing potable water to the needy, Suqia also aims to find innovative and sustainable solutions, through Research and Development (R&D) efforts to water scarcity and water desalination. This supports the UAE’s national efforts to transform itself into a knowledge-based economy with a focus on modern technology, research, development and innovation. Suqia oversees the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award, worth USD 1 million. The Award was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to encourage research institutions, individuals, and innovators worldwide, to find sustainable and innovative solutions for water scarcity using solar energy.
We aspire to contribute to the creation of a world where clean water is available for all, and where problems turn into possibilities and opportunities. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to continue our efforts in humanitarian and volunteer work, to continue the cultural and human legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, during the Year of Zayed, and to move towards securing the availability of clean water to people all around the world.
