HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) met with HE Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar). Masdar is leading the consortium that is implementing the 800MW third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation at DEWA, Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development at DEWA, and Fawaz Al Muharrami, Head of Projects Delivery at Masadr Clean Energy, attended the meeting.
The meeting was also attended by the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies, which were directed to adhere to the highest standards of security, health and safety, and to complete the project according to the highest quality standards and the project schedule.
Domingo Vegas Fernández, President of Gransolar from Spain, Ramón Jiménez Serrano, Managing Director of Acciona, also from Spain, Alberto Nigro, Chief Operating Officer of Italy’s Ghella, and Marco Fontana, Country Manager-UAE at Ghella also attended the meeting. The EPC contract has been awarded to an international consortium led by the renewable energy contractor GranSolar from Spain, alongside Spain’s Acciona, and Italy’s Ghella.
Électricité de France (EDF) recently joined the Masdar-led consortium developing the 800MW third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, through its subsidiary company, EDF Energies Nouvelles, a market leader in renewable energy.
Al Tayer reviewed the implementation progress of the third phase, which will produce 800MW in 2020. The third phase will be completed in 3 stages over 16 square kilometres. The first 200MW stage is expected to be operational in the first half of 2018. The 300MW second stage will be operational in 2019, and the third 300MW stage will be completed in the first half of 2020.
The 200MW second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, marking a new phase in the excellence and leadership of the UAE, furthering its dependence on renewable and clean energy sources.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the largest single-site solar energy project in the world, with a planned production capacity of 1000MW by 2020, and 5000MW by 2030, with total investments of AED50 billion. Upon completion, the solar park will reduce over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
