Dhahi Khalfan Intellectual Property Center introduces Intellectual Property Expert Diploma in cooperation with Dubai Courts

Diploma course will be conducted under the supervision of academics & experts accredited by the World Intellectual Property Organization

Dhahi Khalfan Intellectual Property Center, which is under the umbrella of Emirates Intellectual Property Association (EIPA), has announced that it is launching the Intellectual Property Expert Diploma, a professional course which aims to develop a group of experts accredited in the fields of patents, registered trademarks, copyrights and intellectual property rights in cooperation with the Dubai Courts. The Diploma of the Intellectual Property Expert is divided into four sections, including the IP System Entry and International Conventions; Diploma of an Expert in Patents and Trade Secrets; Diploma of an Authorized Expert in Literary Property; and Diploma of an Expert in Trademarks and Illegal Competition. The diploma will take place on 4 March 2018 at the Emirates Towers Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai.

Applicants who are interested in obtaining the Diploma of an Accredited Patent Expert should complete the IP System Entry and International Conventions course, in addition to the Special Course on Patents and Trade Secrets. Those wishing to obtain the Diploma of an Expert in Trademarks and Illegal Competition must complete the IP Entry Course and the International Conventions, along with the Special course on Trademarks and Illegal Competition, while those looking to get a Diploma of an Authorized Expert in Literary Property should complete the IP Entry Course and International Conventions, as well as the Special course of Literary Property. Applicants of the diploma of Intellectual Property Rights Expert should complete the IP System Entry and International Conventions course in addition to the courses related to Patent and Trade Secrets, Trademarks and Illegal Competition and Literary Property. The diploma allows the applicant to register in the Dubai Courts Expert Panel after completing the registration requirements, in addition to obtaining the diploma of an accredited expert.

H.E. Dr. Major-General Abdul Qudoos Abdul Razzaq Al Obaidly, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Quality and Excellence in Dubai Police and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EIPA, said that ‘The Diploma of the Intellectual Property Expert plays a key role in enhancing proficiencies in implementing IP laws. He added that as a first-of-its-kind program in the region, it is a step closer to achieving the UAE’s drive to climb its rank in the WJP Rule of Law Index, where it landed 43rd in 2017, jumping 10 positions higher from 53rd in 2016, according to the World Bank report.

Al Obaidly noted: “The program is part of our efforts aimed at providing high-quality training to a new generation of qualified professionals to protect IP rights as a pressing need to drive innovation which is a national priority in the UAE, inspired by the vision of our leaders in fostering innovation as one of the pillars of the future. We believe the diploma course will pave the way for the development of our human capital in line with international best practices as part of our successful strategic partnership with Dubai Courts. Our aim is to equip trainees with knowledge and expertise to protect the creative intellectual outputs, which is essential in achieving the UAE Vision 2021. All these initiatives are in line with the nation’s goal to build a competitive knowledge-based economy led by knowledgeable and innovative Emiratis.”

Jawad Al Redha, Member of the Board of Directors of EIPA and the Executive Director of Dhahi Khalfan Intellectual Property Center, said: “As part of our continuous efforts to develop national human capital in the field of intellectual property and enhance human capabilities and competencies in this field, we are glad to establish a Diploma of IP Expert in the fields of patents, registered trademarks, copyrights and intellectual property rights areas.

He added that this diploma is part of the efforts to increase access to specialized, high-quality training and in-depth knowledge of IP to build and strengthen national IP capacities and support national efforts to strengthen the UAE’s position on the world’s intellectual property map. The development of experts and specialists in Intellectual Property is one of the important steps towards achieving the UAE Vision 2021 aimed at building a knowledge-based economy.

The Diploma of the Intellectual Property Expert will be conducted under the supervision of a group of academics and experts accredited by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), who will also be present in this diploma, which requires the registration of the applicant to obtain a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Registration forms for the same must be submitted before 22 February 2018.
