Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) held a workshop on Sanad Bag, to train a number of employees to acquire and develop their skills in dealing with people of determination. The Sanad Bag was launched by the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai to develop the skills of government employees as accredited trainers, to deal with people of determination, and enable them to communicate this knowledge to their fellow colleagues and contribute to spreading awareness on the rights of people of determination. This ensures integrating them into the society, and achieves the objectives of the Dubai Disability Strategy 2020.
“Training accredited trainers by DEWA’s staff enhances the scientific and practical content of ‘Sanad’. This supports DEWA’s ongoing efforts to develop services and initiatives aimed at integrating and empowering people of determination, as well as ensuring an advanced level of understanding, awareness and training among its staff to identify the special needs of different disabilities. This allows them to offer quality services that suit these needs. DEWA’s accredited trainers in this field are ambassadors for their colleagues, as they disseminate knowledge about the types of disabilities and the skills required to deal with them, and thus consolidate the culture of integrating and empowering them among the stakeholders. This supports the Dubai Disability Strategy 2020, and the National Policy to empower People of Determination that was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to create an inclusive society that ensures empowerment and a decent life for people of determination and their families. In addition, the ‘My community… a city for everyone’ initiative was launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a city that is friendly for people of determination by 2020,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
Al Tayer stressed that DEWA derives its vision from the leadership of the UAE Government, which places people of determination at the top of its strategic priorities. DEWA’s role is not only to provide electricity and water services of the highest quality, efficiency and reliability, but also to serve as a socially-responsible government organisation. This supports the directives of the wise leadership, and the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai a tolerant and inclusive society, which embraces civic values.
“DEWA has taken huge strides in supporting and empowering people of determination by launching several initiatives, programmes, and services, according to well-defined plans and strategies aligned with the best global practices and standards. This helps integrate people of determination and achieve their happiness by creating a conducive environment that allows them to unleash their capabilities and potential. This also enhances their inclusion in society, and helps find new ways to involve them in their social environment as capable and creative individuals. These efforts have contributed to raising Social Happiness about DEWA’s role as an organisation that supports people of determination from 87% in 2013, to 92% in 2017,” added Al Tayer.
Al Tayer noted that DEWA has developed clear policies and procedures in the field of customer service for people of determination.
“We have launched several initiatives to support them. DEWA is the first government organisation in the UAE to launch the Ash’ir service, which provides video calling using sign language to communicate with DEWA’s call centre staff. We have also made changes to our website and smart app, to suit their unique needs as they are an integral part of our society. DEWA also provides guidelines to rationalise water and electricity consumption and its customer guide in Braille language to enable people of determination to be updated on the best practices for a sustainable lifestyle. In addition, DEWA highlights the Rammas service, which acts as a virtual employee, making use of artificial intelligence,” said Al Tayer.
“DEWA also launched the Absher initiative, which includes a dedicated team of specialists and qualified staff in human resources, in addition to a hotline, to meet their needs. In addition, DEWA launched the ‘Omniyati initiative,’ to grant the wishes of DEWA’s people of determination, whose conditions may have prevented them from achieving their wishes. DEWA’s Sanad card provides several services to people of determination. The Sanad card offers benefits, such as wheelchair services and the Maraheb service, and other services and features,” said Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
The Sanad Bag contains three main parts: Scientific content, a training manual, the trainee’s notebook, pre and post assessment forms, training cards, and a CD. The bag was prepared by disability specialists from CDA, and its content has been accredited by the UAE University.
