Within the framework of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s commitment to its social responsibility, and in line with the Year of Giving, DEWA participated as the gold sponsor of the Orphan Day celebrations for the 5th year in a row. Orphan Day was organised for the 12th time by Dar Al Ber Society, under the patronage of HH Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at Dubai World Trade Centre.
The event hosted 250 orphans from the UAE and 25 from abroad. It was attended by officials, VIPs, and representatives from sponsoring organisations, as well as a number of volunteers and visitors who participated in drawing smiles and bringing joy to the children through a number of recreational activities and competitive games involving orphans and their relatives, which added fun to the atmosphere of the Holy Month.
“DEWA’s participation in sponsoring this event for the sixth consecutive year is part of our efforts to support the objectives of the Year of Giving, under the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. We are keen to support community activities in all areas and enhance communication with all segments of society to instil Islamic values and culture, as we believe in the importance of supporting the social development process in the UAE, by integrating orphans into society, triggering the role of the community in helping them, communicating with them, drawing smiles on their faces, and taking care of their psychological and behavioural needs, to help eliminate the negative effects of parental loss,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“We appreciate the efforts of Dar Al Ber Society, and commend their efforts to support charitable projects that enhance unity and tolerance among different categories of society. Our sponsorship of this ceremony supports DEWA’s efforts to strengthen its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), to support social development in Dubai, as well as help orphans, and provide them will all support necessary, to enable them to play active roles in society. DEWA strives to enhance their social connections with different parties in the UAE, to support its CSR and the UAE’s contribution towards voluntary and humanitarian work,” concluded Al Tayer.
It is worth mentioning that the number of orphans sponsored by Dar Al Ber Society, in 2016, has reached 33,316 orphans from both inside and outside the country, including 983 orphans from inside the UAE, and 32,333 orphans from abroad, and the number of sponsors reached 16,800 sponsors.
