Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the winners of DEWA Future Utility Cup. The competition, which is the first of its kind in the world, is part of cooperation between DEWA and the global start-up incubator 1776. The competition tapped into 1776’s extensive network of over 3,000 start-ups from 40 cities around the world that have participated in the 1776 Challenge Cup in 2015 and 2016. DEWA received 180 applications for the Future Utility Cup, and 18 teams were shortlisted to the final stage of the competition in five categories.
Bluerise team from the Netherlands took first position in the Sustainability category. Aeroanalytics from the USA won the Operations category. Nowi from the Netherlands won the Technology category. Peeekspower from the Netherlands won the Money and Analytics category, and Viafone won the Loyalty and Satisfaction category.
“DEWA Future Utility Cup, in collaboration with global start-up incubator 1776, is part of our efforts to encourage innovators and speed up innovation in electricity and water. This supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to implement the objectives set by the Dubai Future Agenda, as the framework to shape the future of the strategic sectors in the UAE, and particularly in Dubai. DEWA supports the framework of the Dubai Future Agenda, to establish the largest government accelerator in the world. We adhere to a clear and integrated strategy, based on innovation and work to further implement new initiatives, while continuously supporting Research and Development projects, to manage rapid technological developments,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.photo-1-1
“DEWA consider it a priority to develop partnerships between the public and private sectors. They have a key role in the success of future accelerators by openly benefiting from each other’s experiences to develop the best services and applications and take them to the highest international standards. This in turn will contribute to making Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world,” added Al Tayer.
“DEWA Future Utility Cup is the first of many initiatives planned between 1776 and DEWA, following our partnership agreement. Energy is one of the key sectors that 1776 focuses on. We are delighted with the innovative ideas and cutting-edge solutions our global start-ups presented at this competition, which were centred on building smarter energy infrastructure and cleaner energy solutions. As our start-ups continue to innovate ways to transform the power industry, the DEWA Future Utility Cup will be a not-to-be-missed event for innovators and start-ups,” said Evan Burfield, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of 1776.
DEWA announced the winners during Innovation Week, which it organised from 20-24 November 2016.
