Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) participated in the ‘Clean-Up the World’ campaign, organised by Dubai Municipality, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), under the theme “Our Place…Our Planet… Our Responsibility”. The campaign aims to spread awareness and conservation culture among members of society. The campaign included cleaning up areas in Dubai, along with several beaches, parks, and Dubai Creek with the participation of 53 DEWA volunteers. This comes in line with the directives of our wise leadership to support volunteer work in the UAE, and within the framework of DEWA’s integrated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, emphasised DEWA’s keenness to support environmental and community initiatives, as part of its efforts to consolidate the concept of voluntary work among the community and encourage employees to actively participate in various volunteer activities. “This supports the Year of Giving 2017 and Year of Zayed 2018, as well as the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish the concept of volunteering within the community as a symbol of solidarity and tolerance in our society. This is a key factor in deepening and strengthening the spirit of good citizenship and belonging, to achieve the objectives of the UAE’s national vision and strategies.
Our participation in ‘Clean-Up the World’ campaign in Dubai coincides with our ongoing efforts to achieve the objectives of the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart, integrated, and connected city whose environmental elements are clean, healthy, and sustainable. At DEWA, we have launched a new programme to support voluntary work among our employees through a special section on our website. The objective of the programme is for DEWA employees to participate in community service and charitable projects, by allocating some of their time to volunteering during and outside working hours. The programme aims to facilitate the selection of community programmes and initiatives that suit the interests and abilities of the volunteers and the appropriate times to serve the community, thus, contributing to spreading happiness and creating a positive and stimulating environment,” Al Tayer concluded.
Al Tayer noted that DEWA’s CSR efforts has contributed to raising society’s happiness from 82% in 2013, to 89% in 2016. DEWA launched 224 initiatives from 2013 to 2016, with 42,000 hours of volunteer work achieved by DEWA employees.
